Learmonth and the Pyrenees gateway
Using Learmonth as the pause point on the Sunraysia Highway run from Ballarat toward Avoca and the Pyrenees wine region.
Why break the journey at Learmonth
The Sunraysia Highway runs north-west from Ballarat through Learmonth toward Avoca, St Arnaud and the Pyrenees wine region. Learmonth sits just twenty-odd minutes out of Ballarat, which makes it the natural first leg-stretch: a lakeside walk and a look at the heritage precinct before the longer open-road stretch ahead.

On toward the Pyrenees
From Learmonth the highway continues through farming country toward Avoca at the foot of the Pyrenees ranges. The region is known for its wineries; plan cellar-door visits through the wineries' own sites or the official Pyrenees tourism services, and confirm opening days before travelling.
The return leg
Returning to Ballarat, vary the route or the stops: Lake Burrumbeet lies just south of the highway near Learmonth and suits a late afternoon walk on the foreshore as the light drops.
Lake Burrumbeet
A large freshwater lake about 20 kilometres west of Ballarat and a short drive from Learmonth, popular for walking, picnicking, foreshore camping, boating and redfin fishing.
A complementary lakes stop about ten minutes' drive from Learmonth, often combined with Lake Learmonth in a day of lakes-and-plains touring.
