Walk the precinct
Taking the heritage streets on foot, at your own pace.
Few towns this size keep a streetscape this intact. Learmonth's heritage precinct is recorded on the Victorian Heritage Database for its run of nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings.
The precinct mixes residential, commercial, civic and community buildings from the mid-1800s through to the 1930s, standing on subdivisions that date from the town's first land sales in November 1859 and February 1860. Surviving early buildings include the Stag Hotel building of around 1854, timber Presbyterian and Catholic churches from around 1857, the police station with brick stables and lock-up, and the courthouse erected in the 1860s.

Historical statements on this site are drawn from published sources, principally the Victorian Heritage Database and the Victorian Places gazetteer, and each page notes its sources. We do not publish Aboriginal cultural heritage material unless it has been prepared with appropriate sources and advice, and we welcome corrections from people with better knowledge of the district.
