Learmonth and Ballarat weekend
A two-day country break pairing Ballarat's attractions with the quieter lakes and heritage streets twenty minutes up the highway.
Day one, Ballarat
Base yourself in or near Ballarat, where most of the region's accommodation, dining and major attractions are concentrated. Spend the first day in the city at your own pace; its goldfields history, gardens and gallery are well documented by the official visitor services.
Day two, the lakes and Learmonth
On the second day, drive the twenty-odd minutes north-west on the Sunraysia Highway to Learmonth. Walk the lake foreshore in the morning, take the heritage precinct before lunch, then loop home via Lake Burrumbeet's open water and plains.
Lake Learmonth
The lake beside Learmonth township, ringed by volcanic hills, with picnic areas, playgrounds and lakeside walking on its eastern and northern shores.

Learmonth Heritage Walk
A self-guided walk through the Learmonth Heritage Precinct, whose streets retain buildings from the 1850s onwards including the former courthouse and early timber churches.

Lake Burrumbeet
A large freshwater lake about 20 kilometres west of Ballarat and a short drive from Learmonth, popular for walking, picnicking, foreshore camping, boating and redfin fishing.
A complementary lakes stop about ten minutes' drive from Learmonth, often combined with Lake Learmonth in a day of lakes-and-plains touring.

Making it a long weekend
With a third day, continue north to Clunes and Creswick for booktown browsing and gold-town streetscapes, or push further along the highway toward Avoca and the Pyrenees wine region.
Keep planning
