The precinct is compact enough to cover on foot in an easy hour or two, and walking is the only way to read the streetscape properly.
Learmonth's streets keep their original nineteenth-century subdivisions, and the buildings along them span the town's rise as a coaching stop on the Ballarat-to-Avoca road. Look for the former courthouse and police buildings, the early timber churches, and the Stag Hotel building, the oldest of the group at around 1854.

The walking is flat, on ordinary town footpaths, and free at any time. Most of the buildings remain private property or working premises, so view them from the street. Pair the walk with the lake reserves for a full half-day.
