On the water and the shore

Lake Learmonth's eastern and northern shores, closest to town, carry the picnic areas, playgrounds and nature walks. Lake levels on the volcanic plains rise and fall with the seasons, so treat any water-based plans as conditional and check locally first.

Lake Burrumbeet offers a bigger, wilder counterpart: open freshwater, foreshore walks, basic unpowered camping and well-regarded redfin fishing.

Plan around the season

Winter and spring bring the greenest country and fullest lakes; summer suits early morning walks before the heat settles on the plains. See the practical notes on the plan-your-visit page before travelling.
